Research Highlights

Digital
Camera Analysis - Using a digital camera with a light box designed
to create a lighting situation and distance from the grass that is
unchanging, pictures are analyzed by a computer to remove
subjectivity of raters. Current ratings are taken on a 1-9 scale
which are subject to the raters likes and dislikes. Digital camera
analysis has been used to monitor the drought affects in the rainout
shelter and turf trials with much greater objectivity.
Diseases
- Three diseases are being studied in a lab environment; pythium,
red thread, and brown patch. Three growth chambers have been
programmed for the correct environment of each disease. Plants are
placed inside and then inoculated to find survivors. Please

for more disease information.
Gray
Leaf Spot - Gray leaf spot resistant cultivars were originally
selected in the laboratory. Recently, severe infections in the field
have allowed NexGen Turf Research to produce superior gray leaf spot
resistant cultivars. Visit the disease page for gray leaf spot data.

Rhizomes
are a horizontal underground modified stem which assists in filling
in damaged areas. Rhizomes are found in many species of grasses.
Frequently rhizomes are found on NexGen Turf Research cultivars of
tall fescue.
Wear Resistance - Studies are underway to create varieties that are more wear resistant. NexGen Turf Research will select for cultivars that persist better when utilized under sports field conditions.
