Debra Rush using the lightbox and digital cameraDigital Camera Analysis - Using a digital camera with a light box designed to create a lighting situation and distance from the grass that is unchanging, pictures are analyzed by a computer to remove subjectivity of raters. Current ratings are taken on a 1-9 scale which are subject to the raters likes and dislikes. Digital camera analysis has been used to monitor the drought affects in the rainout shelter and turf trials with much greater objectivity.

Pythium growing in a laboratory tubeDiseases - Three diseases are being studied in a lab environment; pythium, red thread, and brown patch. Three growth chambers have been programmed for the correct environment of each disease and plants are placed inside and then inoculated to find survivors. Arrows point to the rhizomes on Greystone Tall FescueRhizomes are a horizontal underground modified stem which assists in filling in damaged areas. Rhizomes are found in many species of grasses. Frequently rhizomes are found on NEXGEN Turf Research cultivars of Tall Fescue.

 

 

 

 

Wear Resistance - Studies are underway to create varieties that are more wear resistant. NEXGEN Turf Research will select for cultivars that persist better when utilized under sports field conditions.
